Methodology & data sources

How every figure on SIF360 is sourced and calculated, so you can check it yourself. If you spot a number that looks wrong, see Corrections.

Data sources

  • NAV: the daily NAV history published by AMFI for each SIF. All returns and risk metrics are derived from this series.
  • Portfolios, AUM and fund facts: AMC monthly factsheets and portfolio disclosures.
  • Risk band, benchmark, exit load, minimum investment:the scheme's SID and KIM.
  • Expense ratio (TER): total expense ratio disclosures published by the AMC, with the effective date shown next to the figure.
  • Benchmark index levels: Yahoo Finance (BSE 500, NIFTY 50) and niftyindices.com (Nifty MidSmallcap 400).

Plan used

Returns on SIF360 are calculated on the Regular plan, Growth option NAV. Direct plans carry a lower expense ratio, so their returns will be slightly higher than the figures shown here. The expense ratio for the Regular plan is shown on each fund page along with its effective date.

Returns

Absolute return

(latest NAV − reference NAV) ÷ reference NAV × 100

Used for every period shorter than one year. It is a simple point-to-point change, not annualised.

Annualised return (CAGR)

(latest NAV ÷ start NAV) ^ (365 ÷ days elapsed) − 1

Shown only for periods of one year or longer, and for since-inception once a fund is at least a year old.

1M, 3M, 6M and 1Y windows

The window end is the latest published NAV. The start is found by going back the same number of calendar months (1M = one month, 3M = three months, not 30 or 90 days), then taking the last NAV published on or before that date. This is the same convention used by most return trackers, and it means a weekend or holiday on the start date does not shift the reference point forward.

Since inception

Measured from the launch price. Where the first published NAV is within ₹9–₹11, the fund is treated as having launched at the ₹10 face value and that is used as the base; otherwise the first published NAV is used.

Risk metrics

Risk metrics are computed from daily NAV-to-NAV returns, using 252 trading days a year. They describe the past and say nothing certain about the future.

Volatility

standard deviation of daily returns × √252

Annualised, shown as a percentage. Higher means the NAV has moved around more.

Sharpe ratio

(annualised return − risk-free rate) ÷ volatility

Risk-free rate used: 5.0% a year. Annualised return here is the CAGR over the fund's full available history. A higher Sharpe means more return per unit of volatility. It is not shown until a fund has 30 days of history.

Maximum drawdown

min over time of (NAV − highest NAV so far) ÷ highest NAV so far

The deepest fall from a previous peak to a later low, measured on the fund's full NAV history. We also report the date of the peak and trough, and whether and when the fund recovered.

Beta and alpha

beta = covariance(fund returns, benchmark returns) ÷ variance(benchmark returns)alpha = fund total return − benchmark total return

Beta measures how strongly a fund's daily moves track its benchmark. Alpha here is simple excess return over the benchmark for the same period, in percentage points. It is not a risk-adjusted (Jensen's) alpha. Both require a benchmark series covering the same dates.

Benchmarks

Each fund is compared with the benchmark named in its SID (for example NIFTY 500 TRI for equity strategies, or NIFTY 50 Hybrid Composite Debt 50:50 Index for hybrid strategies); the benchmark is shown on the fund page. The Performance page also lists BSE 500, NIFTY 50 and Nifty MidSmallcap 400 as broad reference points, calculated over the same windows as funds. SIF mandates differ across categories, so category averages and index comparisons are descriptive, not a recommendation.

Update timing

AMFI publishes NAVs once a day. SIF360 pulls the latest series after publication and refreshes pages within a few hours, so the NAV date shown is normally the previous business day. NAV is not a live price. Every page that shows returns states the NAV date it is based on, and all figures recalculate from the latest NAV rather than from a monthly snapshot.

Rules for young funds

  • 1M, 3M, 6M and 1Y returns appear only once a fund has at least 30, 90, 180 and 365 days of NAV history respectively.
  • The Sharpe ratio appears only after 30 days of NAV history.
  • Annualised (CAGR) figures appear only for periods of one year or more.
  • Where a figure is hidden, we show a dash rather than an early number that would mislead.

Corrections policy

If you are an AMC, journalist or investor and believe a figure on SIF360 is wrong, write to support@sif360.com with the fund name, the figure, the page, and the source you believe is correct. We acknowledge reports and aim to fix verified errors within 2 working days. Where the published method here, not the data, explains the difference, we will reply with the calculation.
